The chairman of UK digital bank Monzo has stepped down, months after facing a shareholder revolt following the departure of the bank's CEO.

Gary Hoffman, who had been in the role for nearly eight years, is departing before his nine-year term allows. He is being replaced by non-executive director Karen Peacock on a temporary basis while a permanent successor is sought.

Hoffman's departure comes after a controversy last year when Monzo CEO TS Anil stepped down to make way for former Google and Standard Chartered executive Diana Layfield. It was later revealed that Anil was effectively pushed out over disagreements about where and when the company should IPO, as well as international expansion plans.

Anil had wanted to go to market earlier and was planning to step down immediately after the IPO, but directors at the bank reportedly wanted more time to grow the valuation and expand into more countries. The reverberations over his dismissal led some shareholders to revolt in a bid to oust Hoffman and return Anil to the helm.

Anil later returned to the Monzo board in vice-chair capacity.

In a statement to Sky News, Hoffman said that he will leave Monzo with immense pride, knowing that his colleagues have created one of the UK's leading banks that brings together the best of technology and banking, living up to the original founders' dream of making money work for everyone.

Despite the leadership changes and controversies, Monzo continues to grow and serve its 16 million customers in the UK and Europe.
