Monzo Activates Backup Bank in Response to Outage

Monzo, a UK digital challenger bank, has activated its independent backup bank, Monzo Stand-in, in response to a technical issue that left thousands of customers unable to access its app.
The issue was resolved on Wednesday afternoon, but not before thousands of customers reported problems with accessing the bank's app on the Downdetector website. Over 3000 reports of problems were received, with three quarters of them relating to the app.
Customers also took to social media to complain about being unable to transfer money, while others had problems accessing their funds. In response, Monzo activated Monzo Stand-in, a fully independent backup bank that covers data, software, and infrastructure.
Monzo Stand-in is a set of systems that run on Google Cloud Platform and is able to take over from the bank's Primary Platform, which runs in Amazon Web Services, in the event of a major incident. It supports the most important features of Monzo, including spending on cards, withdrawing cash, sending and receiving bank transfers, checking account balances and transactions, and freezing or unfreezing cards.
The Monzo App checks whether Monzo Stand-in is enabled periodically in the background, and if it is, it flips to a simplified UI that supports the bank's most important features.
Monzo has confirmed that the technical issue has been resolved, and all of its services are now back up and running. However, the incident highlights the pressing concern of outages in the banking industry, particularly as more customers move online.
Banking Outages on the Rise
Outages in the banking industry have become a pressing concern for regulators and politicians. According to 2025 figures from the UK Government Treasury Committee, nine of the top banks and building societies operating in the UK accumulated at least 803 hours of tech outages in the last two years, equivalent to more than 33 days.
Monzo's Backup Plan
Monzo's decision to activate Monzo Stand-in in response to the technical issue is a testament to the bank's commitment to providing a reliable service to its customers. The backup bank is designed to take over in the event of a major incident, ensuring that customers can still access essential banking services.
| Feature | Primary Platform | Monzo Stand-in |
|---|---|---|
| Card Payments | Yes | Yes |
| Cash Withdrawals | Yes | Yes |
| Bank Transfers | Yes | Yes |
| Account Balances | Yes | Yes |
| Transactions | Yes | Yes |
| Card Freezing/Unfreezing | Yes | Yes |
Monzo's backup plan has been praised by customers and industry experts alike, who see it as a proactive approach to managing outages. However, the incident also highlights the need for banks to invest in robust technology and infrastructure to prevent outages from occurring in the first place.
