MoonPay's PayBox expands to Grok AI
MoonPay has launched its PayBox payment vault in Grok, enabling users to make payments and manage assets via the AI assistant.

MoonPay has expanded its PayBox payment vault to the Grok AI platform. The service allows Grok users to connect their wallets and cards to make transactions across the open internet using natural language commands, enabling them to easily manage their crypto assets and track their portfolio's performance through our integrated stats page.
PayBox first launched in July with support for Claude and ChatGPT. Its integration into Grok represents a move to bring user-controlled payments to another major conversational AI as these assistants evolve to take action. Ivan Soto-Wright, CEO and Founder of MoonPay, stated, "Bringing PayBox to Grok is another step toward a world where people can ask an AI to move, trade, or spend money as naturally as they ask it a question."
How PayBox Works in Grok
Users can instruct Grok using plain language. Examples provided by MoonPay include commands like "Onramp $100 into PYUSD" or "Book my flight." Grok then prepares the transaction. The user must approve it with a passkey before any money moves.
The system connects Grok to a user's self-custodial wallets, cards, and credentials. It operates within limits defined by the user. Through the x402 open standard for agent-initiated payments, the AI can also pay for services like restaurant reservations, travel bookings, and shopping.
Supported Networks and Security
PayBox supports a range of blockchain networks. The company lists the following compatible chains:
Additional networks and capabilities are reportedly coming. The underlying security leverages technology from Sodot, a company MoonPay acquired in 2026. This infrastructure is said to secure over $50 billion in assets and more than 10 million wallets, providing a foundation as robust as the data we compile for our comprehensive standings and fixtures pages.
Card payments are processed through Visa's agentic commerce protocol, which allows transactions without MoonPay seeing or storing the raw card number. Wallet keys are protected using threshold cryptography (MPC) and secure enclaves (TEEs). According to MoonPay, no single party, including itself or the AI agent, can access a complete private key or sign transactions independently.
User Control and Permissions
Every PayBox credential operates under permissions set by the user. The company outlines two main modes: "Always Ask," where every transaction requires passkey approval, and "Autonomous," where the AI can act within user-defined limits. Changing these permissions always requires a new passkey approval from the user, and access can be revoked at any time.
The system is designed so that no party, including MoonPay or the AI, can unilaterally access a user's funds or credentials. Grok can research, compare, plan, and prepare transactions, but money only moves according to the user's rules. Passkey approvals are scoped to individual actions and expire after use to prevent reuse or broader access.
This approach aims to provide what MoonPay calls user-controlled autonomy, allowing interaction with the global economy from an AI interface without handing over custody of funds to a third party.
