South Korean financial conglomerate Shinhan Financial Group has signed a deal with payments giant Visa. The agreement centers on using Visa's stablecoin platform. It will verify core functions like issuance, remittance, and redemption.

The partnership will also involve pilot programs. These will test using stablecoins for card payment settlement. They will explore AI-based future payment models. The work will facilitate both business-to-business and business-to-consumer transactions.

Platform and Pilot Projects

Visa's stablecoin platform was unveiled in July. It allows firms to mint, move, and manage stablecoins. Shinhan will use this infrastructure. The collaboration goes beyond simple platform use.

Joint pilots are a key component. One focus is applying stablecoins to settle card payments. Another is developing new AI-driven payment systems. The scope includes B2B and B2C transactions.

Shinhan's Organizational Involvement

Shinhan is one of South Korea's 'Big Five' financial groups. Several of its subsidiary companies will join the stablecoin work. The involved units include Shinhan Bank, Shinhan Card, and Jeju Bank.

This broad internal engagement uses the group's extensive financial capabilities. Jin Ok-dong, chairman of Shinhan Financial, commented on the partnership. He said, "We will continue to combine Shinhan's financial capabilities with Visa's global infrastructure to design new financial models together and offer customers differentiated financial experiences."

The chairman's statement highlights the strategic intent. The goal is to merge domestic financial expertise with global payment infrastructure. This aims to create novel services.

Strategic Implications for Banking

The move signals a major foray into digital assets. By partnering with Visa, Shinhan gains access to a tested stablecoin system. This reduces the need to build such technology alone.

Exploring AI-based payment models is forward-looking. It shows the bank is adopting digital currency technology. It is also investing in its next evolution. The involvement of multiple subsidiaries shows a coordinated, group-wide strategy.

This partnership places Shinhan at a key intersection. It connects conventional banking and the evolving digital asset landscape. The pilots could redefine core transaction banking services. The project remains in a testing phase, as outlined in the memorandum.
