Fiserv's digital asset platform went live on October 1, 2026. Its first live use case is Roughrider Coin, a dollar-backed stablecoin now connecting more than 90 banks and credit unions in North Dakota.

Sunil Sachdev, a Fiserv executive, stated, "The launch of our digital asset platform is an important milestone for Fiserv and the financial institutions we serve." The launch marks a shift from speculation to real-world bank-to-bank stablecoin use. It follows a period of market uncertainty after the departure of CEO Michael Lyons and a subsequent void in quarterly regulatory filings.

Roughrider Coin design and backing

Roughrider Coin is a dollar-backed stablecoin designed by the Bank of North Dakota. VersaBank, an OCC-chartered institution, serves as its official issuer. VersaBank provides the full suite of custody services, including minting, burning, custody, and reserve asset management for the stablecoin.

Don Morgan of the Bank of North Dakota said, "Bank of North Dakota proudly works alongside our financial partners to strengthen agriculture, commerce and industry across our state." Regulatory clarity for the project stems from the GENIUS Act. Specifically, Section 4(c) of that act creates a framework for state-qualified issuers under $10 billion in assets, providing legal scaffolding for the Bank of North Dakota's deployment.

Infrastructure and access

More than 90 participating banks and credit unions in North Dakota will access Roughrider Coin. They will do so through Commercial Center, which is Fiserv's existing commercial online banking system. The platform leverages third-party providers for key functions.

This setup makes Roughrider Coin a permissioned, bank-to-bank money movement tool. The approach is distinct from consortium models like the one used for OUSD.

Platform capabilities and positioning

Fiserv is not running a consortium. Instead, it provides white-label infrastructure sold as a feature set to its existing base of approximately 10,000 financial institution clients. The platform is enabled through clients' existing technology at no additional cost.

The platform has a wide range of capabilities for financial institutions:

This positioning allows Fiserv to commercialize stablecoin-enabled banking and payments directly through established banking channels. The current deployment is a regional pilot connecting the 90 North Dakota institutions. Scaling the technology to Fiserv's network of 6 million merchant locations represents a significantly larger challenge.
